Korkeasaari zoo is located on an island close to Helsinki city center. In the summertime, you can even reach the zoo by ferry from Helsinki’s main market square.
Founded in 1889, Korkeasaari is one of the oldest zoos in the world. It’s home to over 150 animal species, including bears, reindeer, and the large Amur tigers. Walking around the island is a pleasant experience for both adults and children any time of the year.
The best time to visit Korkeasaari is in spring, when the bears wake up from hibernation and the island transforms as the snow melts. The zoo is open year-round, so don’t hesitate to visit in winter, as most animals can be seen regardless of the weather.
There are several ways to reach Korkeasaari by public transportation, including bus, metro, and ferry. If you’re driving, note that there’s no parking on the island. Instead, park at the nearby island of Mustikkamaa or at the Redi shopping mall.
Opening hours vary. Check their website for up-to-date information.
