Annantalo, originally known as Annankatu Swedish-speaking public school, began as a progressive school for working-class children in 1886. The school closed during wartime, serving as a military base and hospital, and eventually reopened before closing permanently in 1969. After years of temporary tenants, the building was repurposed into an arts center for children and young people, opening in January 1987. At the opening ceremony, Aarne Laurila, Chairman of the City of Helsinki Board of Culture, envisioned Annantalo as a “hive of exuberant courage and daring,” hoping it would bring joy and inspiration to children across Helsinki.
Annantalo is evolving into a center of expertise for children’s culture in Helsinki, focusing on collaboration with professionals in art, art education, and pedagogy.
It is easy to get to Annantalo by public transportation, including the metro, bus, and tram. If arriving by car, parking at the Kamppi shopping mall is a good option.
