Haltia is located on the edge of Nuuksio National Park in Espoo, just a half-hour drive from Helsinki, and serves as a gateway to the wonders of Finnish nature. This unique place is not only a museum but also an experience that immerses visitors in Finland’s natural landscapes, making it an ideal destination for families with children of all ages.
Haltia offers many activities that engage both youngsters and adults alike. From exhibitions featuring dioramas, art, and interactive video presentations to the “Five Seasons” panoramic wall, families can travel from the archipelago seas to the high fells, exploring all 41 of Finland’s national parks without leaving the building.
The first Saturday of every month is Family Hiking Saturday at Haltia, where themes change monthly, providing new and exciting outdoor education experiences all year round.
Inspired by the Kalevala, Finland’s national epic, the architecture of Haltia is deeply symbolic and creatively integrates the natural and the built environment. The building’s design mimics the form of a mythical bird overlooking Lake Pitkäjärvi, with a tower stretching skyward like a bird’s neck and solar panels that resemble feathers.
The facility also boasts an accessible scenic terrace, outdoor fireplaces, and event spaces, ensuring that everyone, regardless of ability, can enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the surroundings.
The center regularly hosts events and courses that follow the seasons, providing valuable educational content that encourages children and families to explore the great outdoors.
No visit to Haltia is complete without stopping at their restaurant, which offers a taste of Finnish cuisine with stunning views of the nature around it. Coupled with a well-stocked gift and outdoor gear shop, families can take a piece of Finnish nature home with them.
